In the wild, this birds feed mostly on seeds, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, berries and sometimes insects for protein. A healthy diet for a pet citron cockatoo bird should consist of high-quality pellets, a daily helping of fresh bird-safe fruits and vegetables, and occasionally seeds or nuts as treats for good behavior.
Caring For A Citron Cockatoo
If you think it is easy to care for a Citron cockatoo bird or any other pet bird then you are wrong, the Citron Crested bird needs a lot of human interaction to boost their mental stimulation otherwise they will develop destructive habits like biting, loud screaming and even feather pluck.
Irrespective of their size, it is advisable to buy a large cage with enough space for the bird to move and play around, we often recommend a cage size of at least a 4′ x 4′ x 4′.
Regular exercise is a perfect method to interact and bond with the Citron Crested Cockatoo, it is not only a wise technique but a healthy one too that is why we recommend an outside time of about 4 to 6 hours daily for the bird to roam around and play. This method should be carried out under constant supervision so the bird does not fly off although they are not known to be an escape bird but its better not to tempt fate.
Common Health Illness
Over the years it has been identified that the most common health illness liable to affect a citron crested cockatoo bird is Psittacosis. This bacterial infection is common with birds and can be battled by making sure that you handle the citron cockatoo very carefully and also make sure that their cage (environment) is clean at all time. If you notice any health issue with your pet bird like discharges from the eyes, lethargy, difficulty in breathing, quickly contact your vet so that they can get the required antibiotics to combat the illness. Besides the above mentioned side effects, it should not be ignored that the absence of mental stimulation exercise and attention from the bird keeper can also cause destructive habits with the Citron cockatoo like feather plucking and self-mutilating behaviors as mentioned earlier above.
Speech and Vocalization
The Citron Crested cockatoo is also capable of imitating some certain words and sounds if you devote enough time into training them, however this bird specie has a quiet personality and talking isn’t really a strong suit for the Citron parrot as compared to other cockatoo birds so don’t expect a lot from them when it comes to talking.
Color and Marking
This beautiful cockatoo parrot is mostly white with pale orange patches on their cheeks making it very difficult to be ignored when seen even from a far distance, beneath their wings you will find a pale yellow color and also on their tale feathers which can be seen when they stretch their wings, the citron crest has bright orange crest that clearly distinguishes them from the other sulfur-crested subspecies, which have yellow crests. The only way to tell the difference between a male and a female Citron crested cockatoo is that the male bird has black eyes while the female has brown eyes.
